Southco Apprentice Wins Best of British Engineering Award From Semta

Southco apprentice Philippa Dressler-Pearson was recently awarded the UK Apprentice of the Year and Best of British Engineering at the Semta Skills Awards ceremony in London, UK.

Semta (The Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies Alliance) is a not-for-profit organization committed to developing engineering talent in the UK’s most advanced sectors. The organization focuses on enhancing the skills and productivity of the people who work in the engineering and advanced manufacturing technologies sectors, helping the UK to compete on a global scale.

Dressler-Pearson was chosen for the award in recognition of her resolve and determination to pursue ahead with her apprenticeship at Southco, after overcoming the disappointment of being made redundant from her first apprenticeship at another company. At Southco’s Worcester facility, she has assisted in resolving more than 100 quality-engineering issues, and taken the design engineering and project leader role in many high value modification projects.

As part of the Southco apprenticeship scheme, Dressler-Pearson has been able to put her theoretical learning into practical actions. By supporting the Southco engineering team on a number of different projects, she has been able to enhance her skillset to prepare her for her continuing career in engineering.

Southco Europe runs an apprenticeship scheme designed to provide students not pursing university with the opportunity to learn vital career skills within the workplace. The Engineering apprenticeship gives participants the opportunity to obtain a Higher National Certificate (HNC) and National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 3, through practical on-the-job experience and rotations in several departments, including Design, Manufacturing, Operational Excellence and Tooling.

As Nick Bennett, Engineering Manager at Southco explains, Dressler-Pearson has fully immersed herself in the apprenticeship program: “Throughout her time at Southco, Philippa has shown enthusiasm and a strong desire to learn. She has been integral in supporting the rest of our apprentices, and helped produce an induction program for engineers which has been leveraged globally.”

Ann Watson, CEO of Semta said: “Philippa is a very deserving overall winner of the Semta Skills Awards and is an inspirational role model for others. To put the disappointment of redundancy behind her, find a new employer and then excel in the role shows a fantastic attitude and determination to succeed.”

Southco is wholly committed to supporting and investing in apprenticeship schemes that help to enhance skills of the future engineers and the workplace for many years to come. As a global engineered solutions provider, Southco recognizes the growing demand for engineering resources and is committed to supporting future talent by participating in STEM programs around the world.
