A University of Delaware Engineering Team sponsored by Southco’s Concordville headquarters recently earned two awards for Mechanical Engineering excellence at the University’s annual Career Celebration and Senior Appreciation Event.

Held by the University of Delaware Mechanical Engineering Department, the Career Celebration and Senior Appreciation Event recognizes the achievements of senior students with focus on Senior Design, discusses the latest research in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and presents Distinguished Career Awards to accomplished alumni.

Team Southco received two Senior Design awards for Mechanical Engineering excellence: Best Overall Project and the “Git-er-Done” award, which is sponsored by UDME alumni and given to teams whose completed projects are closest to a real world application in a given sponsor’s business.

Team Southco was sponsored by Dr. Ratnesh Dwivedi, Senior Principal Engineer, and supported by Ron Magidson, Senior Engineer and Bryan Graham, Engineer, Southco. Members of Southco’s Engineering Services team participate in a number of STEM (Science, Technology, Education and Math) initiatives throughout the year, hosting events for students interested in engineering careers onsite at company headquarters in Concordville, PA, and presenting to colleges and secondary institutions throughout the Delaware Valley.

The team’s project focused on updating the controls and drive system for existing load frame testing machines in Southco’s Product Evaluation lab. Team Southco ultimately updated the controls and drivers on these older machines, saving Southco $30k on the cost of converting them through the original manufacturer.

“On behalf of everyone at Southco, we would like to congratulate our team on their accomplishments,” said Al Frattarola, Director of Global Engineering and Technology at Southco. “We are pleased to offer University of Delaware engineering students the opportunity to work on real world engineering applications and provide them with access to the industry-leading engineering resources we have at Southco.”
